Microplastics Researcher Joins Team as Science Communicator

Karly McMullen Science Communicator

During an exciting time of growth and development, expanding our microplastics technology and services and entering the environmental DNA market, Ocean Diagnostics is thrilled to welcome aboard recent Master of Science graduate Karly McMullen as the team’s first Science Communicator.

With a deep understanding of microplastics gained during her studies, Karly brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to our team’s mission of advancing research on microplastics and biodiversity science. Helping to bridge the gap between research and public engagement, she hopes to make a positive impact on our oceans.

Karly completed her Master of Science at the Institute for Oceans and Fisheries of the University of British Columbia, where she collected and reported on microplastics from various sources, including penguin scat, fish, zooplankton and Galápagos waters.

During her research, she interned for Ocean Diagnostics sharing stories from microplastic experts in Canada to educate and raise awareness about the problem. With knowledge in microplastic science, coupled with her Bachelor of Arts in Communication, she brought her passion for science communication into our campaigns, translating complex science to the public.

As a researcher, Karly also had the opportunity to explore Ocean Diagnostics’ technology. Realizing first-hand how these tools can drastically improve the efficiency and quality of microplastic research data, she is excited to share her firsthand experience with these cutting-edge tools with fellow microplastic researchers.

“I immediately identified with Ocean Diagnostics’ mission to detect and diagnose our planet's greatest environmental threats and am excited to help contribute to this inspiring goal.” - Karly McMullen

In her new role, Karly will work within the marketing team to share news about microplastic pollution and biodiversity loss, and information about our research technology and science, as well as help to bring science educational tools to middle and high schools.

“I am excited to bridge the gap between research and the public..." - Karly McMullen

“I am excited to bridge the gap between research and the public. By engaging with stakeholders such as researchers, regulators and community scientists, I can better understand their needs in order to support them in addressing the issues our oceans face,” explains Karly.

Our team is committed to creating a brighter future for our oceans, and we are proud to have Karly on board. Her microplastics knowledge and science communication skills are valuable assets as we continue to collaborate and innovate to drive positive change and protect the health and well-being of our oceans for generations to come.
